Peadar writes: “This was the first piece of music I intentionally composed. My father had died and I had taken over the choir but I was very young and stupid. I had to learn to play the organ etc and as a good percentage of the choir members were only slightly older then me, they were not about to take orders from such a young pup as I. So the younger kids and the older men stayed and came to rehearsals. I had a Saturday morning session every week for the boys. I had just taken over the beekeeping as well and was learning that trade at the same time. So I found this poem By Douglas de hIde – Irelands first President since Independence. The poem was about bees and it called to me – the music just seemed to come out of its own accord as I needed it.

“Three of Ireland’s finest musicians – Peadar Ó Ríada, Martin Hayes and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh – come together to record 19 of Peadar’s original tunes in a new album of Irish traditional music “that achieves such an orchestral sound … (it) may echo for years to come” (Irish Times Review, May 5, 2010).
The album, entitled 3 Triúr sa Draighean, was recorded in the Ó Ríada family home in Cúil Aodha, Co. Cork, named after the ‘Blackthorn’ which grows in abundance around the house.
The film, by New York and Ireland based filmmaker Dónal Ó Céilleachair, follows the three musicians throughout the entire recording process on an intimate journey through the passageways of Irish traditional music, presenting “a rich tapestry of insights into the creative process”.”

Martin Hayes: “In bringing Irish music under the umbrella of an organization like West Cork Music, with its accomplishments in presenting chamber music, we benefit from the ethos the organization has so skillfully and tastefully created, enabling us all to focus on the details and nuances of traditional music.”

Triúr Sa Draighean
Peadar Ó Riada has gathered 19 of his own original tunes, transposed them into 16 tune sets and brought them to life in the company of fiddlers Martin Hayes and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. And without sleight of hand, or mixing desk trickery either. Their new CD, Triúr Sa Draighean , is aptly titled: it’s so intimate it’s as if the three musicians got the gist of the tunes, gathered round the fire and pressed the record button.
